Happy Spring, Moviecyclers!

Tomorrow morning I get to depart on my first family vacation in 2 years! The destination? The island of Kauai in our most tropical U.S. state!

My kids and I are super excited and I thought it would be cool to highlight one of my very favorite movies set in Hawaii – 50 First Dates.

This is probably on my top 20 list of fave flicks, which is unusual because I normally am lukewarm towards Adam Sandler, but this one makes me laugh and tear up every time I watch it.

The story follows Sandler as Henry Roth, the ultimate bachelor spending every night with a different tourist in need of an island fling. No strings attached and he can be whoever they need him to be…..for one night. Then he goes to great lengths to ensure the lovely ladies never call him again.

Then he meets Lucy (Drew Barrymore). A beautiful girl sitting in an island cafe, making houses with her waffles. Henry joins her and they have a wonderful time and agree to have a 2nd date – a major first for Henry. The next day he arrives to find that Lucy has no memory of meeting him. Or any new memories after a near fatal car accident the year before. She just lives the same day over and over.

What follows is an amazingly adorable story of a man who must make the woman of his dreams fall in love with him every single day and convince her that they can make a life together….even if she can’t remember it.

This movie is filled with a hilarious supporting cast. Rob Schneider, Lusia Strus, Dan Akroyd, Blake Clark and others provide non-stop giggles. So do a few choice marine animals. Henry works at an aquarium and his walrus sidekicks are awesome.

My favorite supporting character has to be Sean Astin as Lucy’s brother Doug, a steroid-injecting, mesh shirt-wearing hothead with a wicked lisp. I barely recognized him the first time I saw it and his jokes always make me laugh the most.

This film has it all – great cast, great jokes, the ability to see Adam Sandler in some kind of romantic light (at least they point out that his head is shaped like an egg), a beautiful island setting and an amazing soundtrack that will put you into a laid back mood.

If you haven’t seen this movie, come on down to Moviecycle and we will set you up with a copy for $6.99 or less ( I am pretty sure I saw a copy on our sale table…). You won’t be sorry.

Aloha!

MOVIECYCLE NEWSLETTER #2418

January 29, 2011

Welcome to an all new Newsletter from your fine friends at Moviecycle, located in Beautiful downtown Ballard! We have a lot to cover, so let’s start off with

NEW TRADE-INS

It’s a well known fact that here at moviecycle we take in a mind-boggling amount of amazing titles on a daily, and sometimes hourly basis! Why, I think I can safely say without fear of hyperbole that we have the single greatest collection of dvds anywhere on planet earth, including the internet! On our WALL OF COOL right now we have a ton of great titles….

Mr. Show: Seasons 1 &2

Aqua Teen Hunger Force #4

Gone With The WInd

Streetcar Named Desire

The Great Escape

Five Easy Pieces

Heavy Metal

Snatch

Monty Python’s Life Of Brian

Do The Right Thing

The list could literally go on for ever and ever with me typing and you reading amazing movie titles one after the other for so long, that when I was finally done, you would look around to find the world had passed you by, your friends and family long dead, with your wife’s skeleton at your feet holding a single rose. WE’VE GOT SO MUCH GOOD STUFF!!

GREEN DOTS GALORE!!

Our greet dot sale at last years seafood fest was such a roaring success that we’ve adapted it all year round here at MC (that’s what people in the know call our little slice of heaven!) Any movie with a green dot on it is yours for the low, low price of $3.99! We have table upon table of great stuff for all you film buffs out there! See if any of these titles ring a bell; Any Given Sunday, Max Payne, Two Weeks Later, Stuck On You, Scary Movie, The Fantastic Four, Austin Power; the Spy Who Shagged Me, Basic, Taxi, Fun With Dick & Jane, Day Zero, Superstar… the list goes on. And who doesn’t have a mere four dollars to drop on a quality flick. Except for people with horrible drug and alcohol problems that drink and use to forget who soul crushing their lives are…but i think that goes without saying.

FAN FICTION!

A poem was recently sent to us from moviecycle customer Nick DeCapertini;

Ode To The Cycle

There is a place right down the block

Where movie fans all love to flock

Their prices fair, to buy a flick

Their shelves are full, their service quick

Moviecycle is the place to be

If it’s movies that you want to see.

We had to edited out 3 stanzas out of this poem that dealt with a show in Tijuana went to last summer, but I think you see what he was going for. That you Nick, and thanks to all our fans! Keep the letters coming in!

GEOFF REED’S PICK OF THE WEEK!

The Most Amazing Comedy Film Every Made In The History Of Cinema. Did I Say "Comedy Film"? I meant Film Period. Yeahhh...that's the ticket!

That’s right everyone!

it’s time for another amazingly awesome REEDCO movie pick. This one is sure to tickle the funny bone of an comedy fan out there! I’m talking about the comedy that changed the way the world laughed, changed the way the world cried, and yes, even changed the way we lived. The movie? Of course I’m talking about the amazingly funny laugh-riot Wieners! I won’t go into to many details about the plot, since most of planet earth has seen this one a dozen times or more, but it stars the amazingly sexy Kenan Thompson (Goodburger), comedy queen Jenny McCarthy, (too many good movies to list), and the silver screens bad boy Darrel Hammond. It is the story of three friends, who, for various reasons travel across the country in an Oscar-Meyer weinermobile. They meet various wacky people, fight with each other, try and get “dates wit’ hotties” and other nutty things. Trust me when I say, this movie with blow you away! And guess what!! We Have It Here At Moviecycle!!! Well….that just about wraps up this week’s Pick Of The Week!

ASK Dr. Flicks!

Dr. Flicks is a film-buff, and not an actual doctor. His addiction to pain killers, and a freak mishap with a young girl and a toaster oven ended his dreams of being a male nurse in the early 1970s. This column is a forum for movie triva only.

Dr. Flicks,

On of my favorite movies is “North By Northwest” I love the famous scene with the airplane flying in over them! How many takes did it take to get such a legendary moment on flim

Kip Hanson

Dear Kip,

Don’t Know…..Don’t Care.

Send your questions for Dr. Flicks into moviecycle today! Who knows! You might see you’re name in bright lights someday! But I seriously doubt it!

Anyways….that wraps up another Moviecycle newsletter! Come on down to our store! We are at 2240 market street, open everyday from 10 to 9!!

Yes kiddies…it’s almost that time of year again…All Hallows Eve!! Such Memories! The Costumes, The Ghouls and Goblins, The Costumes, and me getting subjected to year after year of horrible social embarrassments, butt-kicking, and social scarring events that haunt me to this day! Here are but a few more of my movie memories in a column I will call;

Halloween: My Stories

By Geoffrey Reed

JAWS (1975) Steven Speilberg’s quintessential masterpiece about a great white shark wrecking havoc seaside. Roy Scheider leads an all-star cast in this classic horror film that made film-fans afraid of the beach for decades to come. I first saw this film at an outdoor beach party at the tender age of 15. I had moved to Seattle shortly after my mom told me “that guy wasn’t really your dad” I was in a new town trying to make friends, and crashed this beach-kegger as “the new kid in school” I helped myself to a cup of beer, and watched the film being projected on a huge white sheet, ready to have the time of my life. My hopes for making new friends was cut short when I heard someone yell “Hey dillweed! Surf’s Up!” Ten mintues later I was strapped naked to a surfboard about half a mile from the shoreline. The icy cold Puget Sound waves crashing around me. I could hear the echos of laughter from the shore, signaling the good times being had without me. The paramedic who gave me mouth to mouth said I swallowed more water than anyone in his history on the job. He also said when they pulled my lifeless, naked body out of the water they thought I was a girl. According to the comments left in response to the photos they posted of me on line, many agreed.

The Craft (1996) Neve Campbell stars in this Horror film about a trio of high school witches who wreck havoc on their classmates (and ultimately themselves) in this supernatural thriller. This film was released at a time when I was myself dabbling in the occult myself! I had just tried out for, and gotten rejected by the Grunge band Swampwater (They said the didn’t need someone playing the recorder in the band!) And was feeling pretty low. I decided to become goth. At first it was really fun wearing black clothing and mascara…(if by “fun” you mean getting tied to the flagpole outside of school with the word “fruitcup” scrawled across your forehead in permanent marker) Anyways, I befriended a goth girl named Cora-Beth. She said she was a witch, and that if I joined her coven, we could get revenge on everyone. I went over to her house, where she was boiling a witches brew in her parents kitchen. She handed me a test tube of a clear liquid and asked me to pour it into the pot. I did so. Instantly a horrid mix of liquid bleach and boiling fat exploded in my face. I screamed in agony and stumbled around the kitchen, reaching out for some support, which came in the form of the red-hot burners of the stove. Cora-Beth visited me in the hospital once, then started dating a guy who would go on to pants me on a twice-daily basis for the rest of my high-school career. I learned some valuable lessons that summer. Like how to sort-of see again, and live a life without discernible fingerprints.

SAW (1994) This gory film (and later successful film franchise) revolves around the Jigsaw killer, and his victims. He captures various people, and forces them to fight for their lives by making them choose between facings various near-deadly, body mutilating “boobie traps”. Needless to say there is gory galore in this genre favorite, and needless to say some of those copycat jokers at my school took it to the next level… I was at the mall, licking on a delicious corn-dog with dallops of mayonnaise spread on it and looking at a picture of Marilyn Manson that was on display in the front wind of a hot topic. Suddenly, I felt a burlap sack behind pulled over my head. I tried to scream, but was restrained and thrown into the back of a van. Amazingly loud hard-core punk music played in the background (I think it was third-eye blind) I blacked out almost instantly. I woke up in a urine-soaked basement, wearing a prom dress and died to a wall. On a small t.v. monitor, a man in a top-hat demanded i follow his instructions if I wanted to “see the light of day” Well…i did what was asked of me. I cannot say what i did on this site, but it included the following; ping-pong balls, a can of pledge, a vacuum cleaner, my corn-dog from the mall, rubber tubing, a great Dane, a zip-lock bag of peanut butter, a feather duster…but I digress. All in all it was a very trying evening that ended with me “seeing the light of day” I am glad that I made it out alive, and that I get a discount at the proctologist.

Anyways…all of these titles are available here at Moviecycle! And thru Oct. 31 they are all 20% off!!

The Book of Eli was not a movie I was initially drawn to when it appeared in theaters. The lone wanderer in a post-apocalyptic world is not my favorite plot line, and the religious tones of the film put me off as well.

I thought I would give it a try though when it rolled into the store. I was surprised at how engaged I became right off the bat. I had forgotten how well the Hughes brothers can direct.

The beginning of the film relies on visuals mostly and that can be a hard thing to pull off unless it is done right. Denzel Washington plays his Eli character with quiet humor that made me like him right away. And honestly it has been awhile since I liked him in anything.

The action sequences were awesome, one in particular towards the beginning actual made me giggle it was so cool. Washington did many of his own stunts for the hand to hand combat stuff, and the results paid off.

Story was good (nice twist ending), hero was good (Washington redeemed himself a bit for me), villain was great (Gary Oldman…can’t go wrong there!), and the visuals were stunning.

This is definitely a movie worth watching!

First film. Say Anything. That’s right. Anything you want. This pretty picture features John Cusack as Lloyd Dobler, an average day teen, chillin’ in Seattle, graduating and all that. College is surely on everyone’s minds, sept for Lloyd, whose main concern regards asking out the super smart and popular Diane Court. Featuring that one scene and directed by Cameron Crowe, this movie helped set the 80s as the decade for teenage tomfoolery. Fun fact: when Lloyd drives down 45th, he passes the Guild 45th theater which happens to be playing another Cusack flick, Tapeheads. Reality just got pretty crazy in this mud!

Second film. 12 Monkeys. Originally not conceived as a TV biopic based around the casting dilemmas behind a fictionalized 1960s pop group, 12 Monkeys was eventually adapted by Terry Gilliam as a futuristic sci-fi thriller where a virus has killed millions and survivors such as Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt must live underground. A bunch of stuff happens. Fun fact: Director Gilliam gave Bruce Willis a list of “Willis acting clichés” that he was refused to use during filming (such as the “steely blue eyes look”).

Third film. Memento. Directed by one of my favorites, Christopher Nolan, this film is a crazy ride where Guy Pearce repeatedly loses his short-term memory, relying on sticky notes to remember just what the hell he’s been up to. Throw in some mystery and murder and you’ve got yourself a fascinating driller (drama-thriller… insanely clever, i know). Fun fact: Christopher Nolan originally wanted Alec Baldwin for Guy Pearce’s roll. Let me tell you, it’s a good thing they didn’t have any costumes fitted for the character beforehand… Because Alec Baldwin is pretty large and Guy Pearce isn’t. Okay, not funny. Moving on.

Fourth Film. White Chicks. Directed by Kenan Ivory Wayans, this film features his brothers Shawn and Marlon as two kind of crappy FBI agents who are told to go undercover in an abduction case by disguising themselves as the daughters of a tycoon (hence, “white chicks”). What could possibly go wrong? Fun Fact: The original title of the movie was called the Miltons, in attempts to showcase a more direct spoof of the Hilton family.

Fifth Film. No. Fifth TV Show. No. First TV Show. The Kids in the Hall: Season 1. A wonderous sketch comedy show anyone my age should recognize from reruns on Comedy Central, this Canadian sketch comedy show originally aired in 1988 under the guise of Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels. Most of the sketch comedy is wild and out there, reminiscent of Shakespeare, with most female roles being commandeered by the all-male cast. Great late 80s/early 90s comedy. Fun fact: The name of the troupe comes from comic personality Sid Caesar, who, when telling a joke that didn’t go over well, attributed it to “the kids in the hall”.
