MOVIECYCLE NEWSLETTER #2418

January 29, 2011

Welcome to an all new Newsletter from your fine friends at Moviecycle, located in Beautiful downtown Ballard! We have a lot to cover, so let’s start off with

NEW TRADE-INS

It’s a well known fact that here at moviecycle we take in a mind-boggling amount of amazing titles on a daily, and sometimes hourly basis! Why, I think I can safely say without fear of hyperbole that we have the single greatest collection of dvds anywhere on planet earth, including the internet! On our WALL OF COOL right now we have a ton of great titles….

Mr. Show: Seasons 1 &2

Aqua Teen Hunger Force #4

Gone With The WInd

Streetcar Named Desire

The Great Escape

Five Easy Pieces

Heavy Metal

Snatch

Monty Python’s Life Of Brian

Do The Right Thing

The list could literally go on for ever and ever with me typing and you reading amazing movie titles one after the other for so long, that when I was finally done, you would look around to find the world had passed you by, your friends and family long dead, with your wife’s skeleton at your feet holding a single rose. WE’VE GOT SO MUCH GOOD STUFF!!

GREEN DOTS GALORE!!

Our greet dot sale at last years seafood fest was such a roaring success that we’ve adapted it all year round here at MC (that’s what people in the know call our little slice of heaven!) Any movie with a green dot on it is yours for the low, low price of $3.99! We have table upon table of great stuff for all you film buffs out there! See if any of these titles ring a bell; Any Given Sunday, Max Payne, Two Weeks Later, Stuck On You, Scary Movie, The Fantastic Four, Austin Power; the Spy Who Shagged Me, Basic, Taxi, Fun With Dick & Jane, Day Zero, Superstar… the list goes on. And who doesn’t have a mere four dollars to drop on a quality flick. Except for people with horrible drug and alcohol problems that drink and use to forget who soul crushing their lives are…but i think that goes without saying.

FAN FICTION!

A poem was recently sent to us from moviecycle customer Nick DeCapertini;

Ode To The Cycle

There is a place right down the block

Where movie fans all love to flock

Their prices fair, to buy a flick

Their shelves are full, their service quick

Moviecycle is the place to be

If it’s movies that you want to see.

We had to edited out 3 stanzas out of this poem that dealt with a show in Tijuana went to last summer, but I think you see what he was going for. That you Nick, and thanks to all our fans! Keep the letters coming in!

GEOFF REED’S PICK OF THE WEEK!

The Most Amazing Comedy Film Every Made In The History Of Cinema. Did I Say "Comedy Film"? I meant Film Period. Yeahhh...that's the ticket!

That’s right everyone!

it’s time for another amazingly awesome REEDCO movie pick. This one is sure to tickle the funny bone of an comedy fan out there! I’m talking about the comedy that changed the way the world laughed, changed the way the world cried, and yes, even changed the way we lived. The movie? Of course I’m talking about the amazingly funny laugh-riot Wieners! I won’t go into to many details about the plot, since most of planet earth has seen this one a dozen times or more, but it stars the amazingly sexy Kenan Thompson (Goodburger), comedy queen Jenny McCarthy, (too many good movies to list), and the silver screens bad boy Darrel Hammond. It is the story of three friends, who, for various reasons travel across the country in an Oscar-Meyer weinermobile. They meet various wacky people, fight with each other, try and get “dates wit’ hotties” and other nutty things. Trust me when I say, this movie with blow you away! And guess what!! We Have It Here At Moviecycle!!! Well….that just about wraps up this week’s Pick Of The Week!

ASK Dr. Flicks!

Dr. Flicks is a film-buff, and not an actual doctor. His addiction to pain killers, and a freak mishap with a young girl and a toaster oven ended his dreams of being a male nurse in the early 1970s. This column is a forum for movie triva only.

Dr. Flicks,

On of my favorite movies is “North By Northwest” I love the famous scene with the airplane flying in over them! How many takes did it take to get such a legendary moment on flim

Kip Hanson

Dear Kip,

Don’t Know…..Don’t Care.

Send your questions for Dr. Flicks into moviecycle today! Who knows! You might see you’re name in bright lights someday! But I seriously doubt it!

Anyways….that wraps up another Moviecycle newsletter! Come on down to our store! We are at 2240 market street, open everyday from 10 to 9!!

Thank You,

In brainstorming for the best blog post idea ever, I came across the radically mind-banteringly fascinating gun-dungaree skip hoppin’ idea of picking 5 notable movies we’ve received in the store this week. 5 flavors for 5 days, Monday through Friday or Sunday through Thursday (whatever you like, french fry).

First film. Say Anything. That’s right. Anything you want. This pretty picture features John Cusack as Lloyd Dobler, an average day teen, chillin’ in Seattle, graduating and all that. College is surely on everyone’s minds, sept for Lloyd, whose main concern regards asking out the super smart and popular Diane Court. Featuring that one scene and directed by Cameron Crowe, this movie helped set the 80s as the decade for teenage tomfoolery. Fun fact: when Lloyd drives down 45th, he passes the Guild 45th theater which happens to be playing another Cusack flick, Tapeheads. Reality just got pretty crazy in this mud!

Second film. 12 Monkeys. Originally not conceived as a TV biopic based around the casting dilemmas behind a fictionalized 1960s pop group, 12 Monkeys was eventually adapted by Terry Gilliam as a futuristic sci-fi thriller where a virus has killed millions and survivors such as Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt must live underground. A bunch of stuff happens. Fun fact: Director Gilliam gave Bruce Willis a list of “Willis acting clichés” that he was refused to use during filming (such as the “steely blue eyes look”).

Third film. Memento. Directed by one of my favorites, Christopher Nolan, this film is a crazy ride where Guy Pearce repeatedly loses his short-term memory, relying on sticky notes to remember just what the hell he’s been up to. Throw in some mystery and murder and you’ve got yourself a fascinating driller (drama-thriller… insanely clever, i know). Fun fact: Christopher Nolan originally wanted Alec Baldwin for Guy Pearce’s roll. Let me tell you, it’s a good thing they didn’t have any costumes fitted for the character beforehand… Because Alec Baldwin is pretty large and Guy Pearce isn’t. Okay, not funny. Moving on.

Fourth Film. White Chicks. Directed by Kenan Ivory Wayans, this film features his brothers Shawn and Marlon as two kind of crappy FBI agents who are told to go undercover in an abduction case by disguising themselves as the daughters of a tycoon (hence, “white chicks”). What could possibly go wrong? Fun Fact: The original title of the movie was called the Miltons, in attempts to showcase a more direct spoof of the Hilton family.

Fifth Film. No. Fifth TV Show. No. First TV Show. The Kids in the Hall: Season 1. A wonderous sketch comedy show anyone my age should recognize from reruns on Comedy Central, this Canadian sketch comedy show originally aired in 1988 under the guise of Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels. Most of the sketch comedy is wild and out there, reminiscent of Shakespeare, with most female roles being commandeered by the all-male cast. Great late 80s/early 90s comedy. Fun fact: The name of the troupe comes from comic personality Sid Caesar, who, when telling a joke that didn’t go over well, attributed it to “the kids in the hall”.

Likewise, we hope you’ll poke your head through our celebrity-cardboarded windows, or maybe even the door, and see our line of spring-summer delights! Get your classics with Ben Hur and The Bridge on the River Kwai. Hitchcock it up with Frenzy and The Birds. Get your Dunst on with Jumanji, or Batman your way around Newsies. If you like to engage in Risky Business, perhaps you should Kill Bill or throw a Bachelor Party. You could always tell yourself, It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time. Also, Se7en!
