Hello Moviecyclers! It’s the newbie, Maja here. As all of you know, Halloween is on its way and that means it’s time for the Wall O’ Ghoul! Because horror is my favorite genre, I got the honor of handpicking which titles to put up (and yes, it was an honor).  Rest assured, I knew what I was doing. We’ve got everything: Zombies, aliens, bloodthirsty madmen wielding chainsaws, knives and other sharp objects, cannibals, classics, and MUCH more! So what are my top picks? Well…

SCREAM (1996): I’m a sucker for horror movies that are also hilarious. If you made me choose two reasons why I adore this movie I’d give you David Arquette as Deputy Dewey and Matthew Lillard as Stu. When you think of stupid teen horror movies, this is THE one that comes to mind. Also, all of Matthew Lillard’s lines at the end of the film are quotable (Example:  “Ow! You hit me with the phone, dick!”). It’s quality entertainment, I promise.

ALIENS (1986): The sequel starts back up where the original left off. The sole survivor of the Nostromo spaceship, Ellen Ripley (my personal hero), finds herself among the Xenomorph kind again, investigating the disappearance of a colony. This time, however, Ripley is accompanied by a group of marines (including Bill Paxton who says “man” at the end of every sentence). Anything with aliens is awesome in my book, but add in a righteous lady who kicks butt and takes names? I’m in love. While I love the original, this sequel makes it to my favorite list because it’s overflowing with action. Also, my heart has a special place for the android Bishop.

MAY (2002): When you’re an outsider with no friends other than the doll you’ve had your whole life, what’s the most logical thing to do? MAKE A HUMAN SIZE DOLL! Kill people who have the best body parts you’re looking for, sew them all together, and there you have it. A brand new, perfect, best friend. I don’t think I need to explain any further why this movie is great.

Whether my favorites sound appealing to you or not, you needn’t worry because we are full of gore, terror, and death here at Moviecycle. You’re sure to find something you do like. We also have Halloween themed movies appropriate for kids.

American cartoonist Harvey Pekar passed away today.  He was a brilliant, odd man.  A file clerk from Cleveland,  Mr. Pekar  wrote the stories of his nerotic,  everyday life into the comix America Splendor . These stories were illustrated by many of  the greatest underground cartoonist known to man, including one R. Crumb.  He also went onto television and argued with Letterman, Wrote reviews of all the jazz records he compulsively collected & had his life made into a movie. The wonderful American Splendor. This film stars Paul Giamatti, and a bunch of other people like the dude from 30 rock with the thick glasses and funny hats.  This is a great film about a great man that we have in stock now.  So come to ballard, buy a DVD then go out and buy some comics.
